One of the key differences between Catesby Tunnel and other real-world, full-scale vehicle test facilities is repeatability. We demonstrated how repeatable data collection in Catesby Tunnel can be in a previous article, which you can read here. Greater repeatability gives you greater confidence in your data, but what makes Catesby Tunnel so repeatable?

There are a number of reasons. Firstly, the surface is exceptionally smooth, +/- 3 mm from being planar over the 2.7 km length. Secondly, there are no other vehicles, so you don’t need to worry about the effect they might be having on the airflow. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Catesby Tunnel boasts incredibly stable weather conditions.

To demonstrate just how consistent the temperature is in Catesby Tunnel we have  analysed data from our permanent weather stations. The graph below shows temperature data from a weather station positioned at the mid-point of the tunnel. As you can see, over the past 12 months the average monthly temperature has been incredibly stable, fluctuating by just 0.7°C, between 9.9°C and 10.6°C.

Comparing this to the weather outside the tunnel, you can quite clearly see which is more consistent. Whilst the average outside temperature varied from 17.1°C in June to 8.2°C in November (an 8.9°C fluctuation), the temperatures in Catesby Tunnel have fluctuated by just 0.6°C in the last eight months. The outside weather stations have only been operational since April, hence an eight month comparison, rather than 12.

What is particularly exciting for customers is how stable the temperature remains over a single day. The graph below compares temperatures inside and outside the Tunnel on 10th September 2023 (the hottest day in the last 8 months). Despite rising temperatures recorded by our weather station outside, peaking at 25.7°C in the shade at approximately 13:00, Catesby Tunnel maintained a cool 10.5°C for the entire 24-hour period.

It’s the same story for the coldest day in the last 8 months (25th April 2023). Outside temperatures plummeted to just 0.2°C before reaching 17.7°C by mid-afternoon, Catesby Tunnel on the other hand, fluctuated between 9.9°C and 10.1°C.
